Ingredients

Mac and Cheese Ingredients

  • 2 cups elbow macaroni
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 2 cups cheddar cheese shredded
  • salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • 1. Cook the pasta: Boil the elbow macaroni according to the package instructions. Make sure to salt the water for extra flavor!
  • 2. Make the roux: In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the flour and whisk until it forms a smooth paste.
  • 3. Add the milk: Slowly pour in the milk, whisking constantly to avoid lumps. Keep stirring until the mixture thickens.
  • 4. Cheese, please!: Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the shredded cheddar cheese. Keep stirring until the cheese is fully melted and the sauce is smooth.
  • 5. Combine and serve: Mix the cheese sauce with the cooked pasta. Serve it in a bowl.

Notes

Use freshly shredded cheese for the best meltability. Pre-shredded cheese often contains anti-caking agents that can make your sauce grainy.
